Marsh Hill

RIBA East Award 2017

This landscape lies within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and formerly possessed an undistinguished 1960s bungalow encompassed by a decayed ‘suburban’ style garden. The new brick, timber and zinc house was designed by MOLE Architects and has been built on rising land on the north-west corner of the site offering generous panoramic views across the River Alde estuary. We grubbed up the former ornamental garden to encourage its re-colonisation by a rich mosaic of the saltmarsh and intertidal flora. Much of the garden is given over to coastal and floodplain grazing marshes and reedbeds; it is traversed by unobtrusive grass paths.
