The latticework metal gate leading to this newly-formed courtyard garden bears the inscription ‘The gate is not for lingering’. David Shrigley’s playful message welcomes visitors from a shady Mayfair mews into this unexpected verdant oasis at the heart of London’s contemporary art gallery district. Our garden with it towering tree ferns, Japanese maples and shade-loving herbage contrasts sharply with, and frames views into and from, the elegant new gallery space designed by David Kohn Architects. The garden also serves as a contemporary sculpture garden, and even boasts a purpose-made café, conveying the second of Shrigley’s messages – this time silhouetted on the building’s parapet in large cut-out letters: ‘Linger Here’.
